The 5 Best Navigation Apps For Android

The 5 Best Navigation Apps For Android

As smart phone technology has expanded and improved, it's hard to remember a time when we didn't have our phones to take care of the multitude of little tasks that we now take for granted. Smart phones have replaced our alarm clocks, watches, land lines, calculators, and hand-held video game systems. With a little sadness, with the purchase of my first smart phone I threw away my Thomas guide. Not only could my phone give me directions, but it could do it in real time and calculate when I'd get there based on traffic! In 2018 we now have a plethora of options on which navigation app we can download as well. For those of you who have an Android device, here are my top 5 picks for navigation apps.

  1. Waze - Waze is so packed with features you may never need some of them. It'll give you all of the basic features including the most accurate arrival times I've seen. You can also see where likely police speed traps are located, find cheap gas on your route, and get the fastest course corrections based upon real-time traffic conditions. It's also visually pleasing, and best of all it's free!
  2. Google Maps - It's the default navigation app for most android users and for good reason! It's relatively lightweight and accurate. It can operate offline. It's got a familiar interface. It's also free. Still, it's not quite as fast and accurate as Waze, nor is it as feature-packed. Like Waze, it's also free.
  3. Maps.me - While it may seem rather plain at first, Maps.me does one thing very well. It has extremely detailed oriented maps and its interface with navigation is flawless. It lacks some of the features as other navigation apps, but if all you want is a clean interface that runs light and smooth, Maps.me may be for you. Like the two listed above, this one's free as well.
  4. Sygic Maps - It you liked Tom Tom, you'll love Sygic. Mostly for the reason that it's based on Tom Tom's software and the interface is nearly the same as the original! It's also packed with features including a speed camera map and speed limit monitor. The price is variable based on device, but the base version is free on the Google Play Store.
  5. Map Factor GPS - Like Sygic, Map Factor doesn't rely on Google for any of its maps or data. It has a clean interface and is very responsive, but the double-edged sword of this app is that the maps are strictly offline. While it will get info on traffic conditions over data, any new streets or adjustments to maps won't be immediately available.

I have to admit that all of the above choices are leaps and bounds better than wrestling with giant maps or flipping through the pages of my trusty Thomas guide, but part of me will forever miss the halcyon days where the only things getting me where I was going was a book and my ability to predict traffic.
