Porche The First To Use Gorilla Glass For Auto Windows

Porche The First To Use Gorilla Glass For Auto Windows

The use of Gorilla Glass for vehicle windows has long been predicted, but it's Porche that beat the competition to the finish line. The new 911 GT3 RS will be the first model to use the innovative new material. At this time only the rear window and rear side windows will get Gorilla Glass, but this is a huge step forward for the automotive industry.

Gorilla Glass is a particular type of thin-film glass which is currently used in most smart phones and many televisions. It is a thin pane of chemically treated glass that has higher strength and flexibility conventional glass several times its thickness. It also has the benefit of blocking up to 99 percent of ultraviolet radiation and has less optical distortion, which gives the driver a clearer line of sight.

There are a few downsides, though. Its high degree of flexibility means that if a window of Gorilla Glass is rolled down at high speeds, it may not seal properly when rolled back up.

Unfortunately this means its use is limited to stationary windows for the time being. It is also fairly expensive, limiting its use to higher-end vehicles.

The auto glass technology is one that we're keeping a close eye on at Fix Auto Costa Mesa here in Costa Mesa, CA.

The use of new materials is an exciting prospect in an ever-changing field.
