Out-of-State Accidents Aren’t the End of the World

Vehicle accidents are always very stressful, regardless of the time of the year, weather conditions or where you’re driving your car, truck or SUV. During the summertime with so many more drivers out on the road and driving in an unfamiliar setting, an out-of-state car accident is more likely to happen.

At Service King Covington Pike in Memphis, TN, we know that many out-of-state accidents occur, so here are some legal tips to help you navigate through this scenario the best way you can.

So, do you know what to do when you’re in an out-of-state accident? Do you know if your insurance policy covers you when you’re traveling in another state? And what about finding a new collision repair shop, the towing company or a doctor?

Perform a Complete Auto Insurance Checkup

Before you embark on any road trip, call your car insurance company to verify that they cover you wherever you’re going. Most auto insurance policies will cover you in the 48 contiguous states. Your insurer can provide you with out-of-state policy details, so simply ask.

Check the Traffic Laws in the Other States

Do a fast Google search for the states that you’ll be driving through and verify that the traffic laws in that area are the same. It’s unlikely that they’ll be much different, but some certain states do have laws that are slightly different. One rule that exists in every state is to keep an eye out for road signs and your head on a swivel.

Be Detail-Oriented When You Document your Accident

You’re in a new unfamiliar place; you’re not local, and it won’t be as easy for you to collect and assemble information and documentation later as it would if you were in your hometown.

● Take photos of the entire scene, including all the street signs, the vehicles involved, the location and all of the individuals who are in the vicinity.

● Get witness statements, names and contact information.

● Call the police and make sure to get a copy of the police report.

● Get all of the contact and insurance information from the other driver and make certain it’s accurate, including their license plate number, vehicle make and model.

Defend Yourself with an Attorney

If you think you might need an attorney, you will need one in the state where the accident happened. You can request for references or ask a lawyer in your home state for a referral, but don’t give an official statement to anyone, including the police and any insurance adjuster until you lawyer up!
