Ford Compensating Customers For Engine Failures In The UK

A recent investigation out of Great Britain conducted by BBC has prompted Ford to issue refunds to customers that are experiencing failures of their Ecoboost 1-liter and 1.6-liter engines. Thousands could be potentially affected by a flaw that has been known to shut down engines at best and spontaneously combust at worst. Ford identified two separate issues that are the likely culprits. With the turbocharged 1-liter engines, a coolest hose on models manufactured between 2011 and 2013 could fail at high temperatures. Ford issued a recall for this issue in 2015, but a few thousand owners may not have been notified. The issue affecting the 1.6-liter unit involved a crack in cylinder heads that could lead to overheating. 

Owners have also noted that on top of overheating and combustion issues, many also experience gasket failure and premature engine wear. 

Ford has issued a statement, saying: "Ford has already made substantial contributions towards the cost of 1.0-liter repairs, but ongoing discussions with customers show that Ford needs to go further to ensure reasonable repair costs are covered.

With any future cases, subject to being assessed and linked to potential 1.0-liter engine overheating, we will contribute 100% of the cost of repair at a Ford dealer.

Furthermore, we will re-examine previous cases to ensure that this policy of a 100% contribution to the repair cost is applied consistently."
