Common Myths About Seat Belts

Annually, seat belts save more than 13,000 lives, so not wearing them is not optional in any way, even if you're taking short trips, but amazingly, many drivers and passengers still decline to their wear seat belts due to reasons that never seem to make sense.

At Service King Babcock in San Antonio, TX, we are shocked when we hear that normally smart people make dumb choices when it come to wearing seat belts. So, here are the following  five common seat belt myths and the facts that easily prove them wrong.

Myth 1: Safety belts are very uncomfortable and restrict movement.

The Transportation Safety Board did a research study that found out that drivers didn't wear seatbelts because they thought they were not comfortable and don't permit them to move around easily within the vehicle. This is actually a fairy tale, because once seat belts are correctly adjusted both of these claims are easily proven false. Seat belts are designed by ergonomic experts, so that they're comfortable to wear and allow for mobility while belted in.

Myth 2: Wearing a seat belt is always an individual's decision that doesn’t affect anyone else.

This is a ridiculous claim, because not wearing a seat belt can certainly influence your family and loved ones if you’re injured in an accident. In addition, it can also have an effect on other motorists since not wearing a safety belt can cause them to lose control of the car during a collision. On top of all of it, failing to wear a seatbelt is against both federal and state laws.

Myth 3: Safety belts will prevent you from escaping your car during a crash.

Safety belts can in actuality keep you from being knocked out, which will in fact improve your chances of escaping from your vehicle during an accident.

Myth 4: It’s preferable to be thrown clear of the wreckage during an accident.

This is patently false and actually it's four times more likely to be seriously injured when thrown from a car, truck or SUV.

Myth 5: It requires too much time to put seat belts on and take them off.

Buckling up normally only takes about three seconds to engage or disengage, which means that if you have to buckle up 20 times daily, it only adds up to one minute.

Avoid these misimpressions and always buckle up, because it's the smart and safe way, not including the fact that it's a law!
