Recent Studies Show Link Between Marijuana Legalization And Fatal Car Crashes

Recent Studies Show Link Between Marijuana Legalization And Fatal Car Crashes

In a recent study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS,) data has shown that automotive collisions resulting in fatalities have risen sharply in states that have recently legalized the recreational use of marijuana. In fact, this is the second consecutive year that the IIHS has conducted a survey of this type with the data trending in a very troubling direction. Our partners at Service King Etna in Pittsburgh, PA are keeping a close eye on these changes, as it directly affects the auto body repair industry as well as insurance providers, emergency medical personnel, and law enforcement officers.

The study has brought to light several disturbing statistics. In states such as Oregon, California, and Oklahoma insurance claims have risen by almost six percent since legalization took place. The amount of these that result in fatalities have also risen accordingly. Perhaps the most shocking data uncovered was that over twelve percent of collisions in which the driver was impaired involved child passengers.

What this has shown from a law enforcement standpoint is that drivers feel more comfortable smoking pot and driving with their children in the car. When the times of the incidents were analyzed, things looked even more grim. You are just as likely to be in a collision with a high driver while driving to work as when driving late at night.

Despite a recent Gallup poll showing that a majority of US citizens support national legalization, the fact that it makes roadways a more dangerous place is unavoidable. Experts have stated that it's much more difficult to determine the effects of marijuana on a given individual than alcohol or other drugs. The strength of the strain taken, the user's ability to function while under its effects, and the amount taken are not easily measurable during field sobriety tests. Hopefully this will be taken into account when considering future legalization in states such as Michigan, where it will appear on the ballot next month.
