From the World Series to the Super Bowl, every sport has a big-time event that is nationally and internationally renowned, and in the sport of racing, it’s the same.
From Fix Auto Gambell in Anchorage, AK here is our list of the top five races from NASCAR to Formula One, where the sport's top drivers from around the world to compete in these world-class races in order to win at the highest level.
1.) The Monaco Grand Prix
The Formula One Monaco Grand Prix is held every year during the last weekend of May on the Circuit de Monaco since 1929. This race weaves through the small city streets of Monaco, which includes a wide range of tight corners, different elevation changes, and an intricate series of tunnels. As part of an international racing series, Formula One consists of leading drivers that must have vehicles that adhere to rules that change every year. Known as one of the most expensive forms of racing on the planet, the Monaco Grand Prix features one of the most challenging courses on the tour.
2.) Indianapolis 500
The Indy 500 is a form of American open-wheel racing and according to is well-known as “the fastest racing series of its kind in North America.” Taking place during Memorial Day weekend, the first Indy race took place back in 1911. The race consists of 200 laps that run counterclockwise around an iconic track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Winners will traditionally kiss the brick finish line and are also presented with a bottle of milk to celebrate the victory.
3.) Daytona 500
The Daytona 500 is NASCAR’s most well-known race as the first big event of the year in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, which took place for the first time back in 1959. Located in Daytona Beach, Florida, the birthplace of NASCAR, the 500-mile long race is held every year in late February. The Daytona 500 carries the largest purse and gets the highest television ratings of any race.
4.) 24 Hours of Le Mans
Often known as the “Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency” the 24 Hours of Le Mans first happened back in 1923. Along with the Indy 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix, it makes up the Triple Crown of Motorsport. Run on the Circuit de la Sarthe, the 24 Hours of Le Mans features a mix of specialized racing roads and public roads that are closed for the race. It is held in June and finishes the following day the same hour it starts over 3,110 miles.
5.) Bathurst 1000
Held annually in early October on the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, the Bathurst is at the pinnacle of motorsports in Australia. Starting back in 1960, the Bathurst 1000's race track is made up of public roads, but its elevation is a serious challenge for the drivers with sharp turns and tight roads.
