Women Drivers Revitalize Saudi Auto Market
Recent legislation that finally allows women to drive in Saudi Arabia has created an boom in their automotive sales. Until recently driving was a punishable crime for women in their country, but in a shocking turn for the uber-conservative country they overturned this in June of this year. Fortunately for then, it had a pleasant correlative effect on their auto industry.
This is a massive win for a country that has been experiencing a slump in vehicle purchases for the last two years of almost twenty percent. Projected sales for the year are expected to increase roughly 16 percent. David Oakley, an LMC Automotive analyst has speculated that through 2022 the trend will continue, peaking at a nearly 25 percent increase.
With a female population of roughly 6.5 million, this previously untapped market could represent a significant force of change for auto manufacturers and dealerships in Saudi Arabia.
"2018 is earmarked to be a pivotal moment in history for women in the kingdom," Nissan Saudi Arabia COO Bader Al-Houssami said in a news release earlier this year.
"As we look to welcome millions of new female drivers in 2018, our focus is to tailor our business accordingly."
