Jaywalking is a Dangerous and Illegal Game

You have seen it more than a few times and it's often scary and perplexing. It's called jaywalking and many people are killed every year doing it, even though it's perilous and against the law.

At Service King Lake Worth in Fort Worth, TX, we hope that our blog readers don't jaywalk and will always take the time to cross the road safely.

If you don't already know, jaywalking takes place when someone crosses a street in a non-designated area or when not allowed. It's also a violation of traffic laws for walkers, joggers or runners who decide to break the law and potentially endanger themselves.

Jaywalking was initially recognized in the 1920s when vehicles started appearing in American cities involving pedestrians in crowded urban regions. As a term, the word "jaywalking" was first a mocking term for rural dwellers who came to the cities and gawked at all of the activity taking place there. By the 1930s, most cities adopted rules for how pedestrians should behave on both sidewalks and streets, and even today it's a serious issue.

While it's most generally thought of as crossing a road outside of a crosswalk, it also entails walking when the stoplight isn't illuminated or when people start crossing after the signal has indicated not to cross.

Different cities have different penalties for jaywalking. In extreme cases, jaywalking can lead to other citations including reckless endangerment or disorderly conduct. The consequences and fines can vary widely depending on the municipality and state, and how big of an issue it is in your area.

The Los Angeles Times investigated the city's pedestrian problem back in 2015 and discovered that police issued 13,152 citations in the downtown area during a four-year period. That number decreases significantly outside of the downtown area and fines can be as much as $197.

Other countries have different rules about jaywalking. The UK has no laws against it, while China employs a series of cameras, artificial intelligence and facial recognition to catch illegal crossers. Jaywalking in Shenzhen, for example, will now result in your face being displayed on a huge public screen with a message and fines sent directly to your cellphone, according to the South China Morning Post.

It's true that while jaywalking may be socially accepted in some places, but that does not mean it's legal. Even though most cities don't like to admit it, the rules against jaywalking are there for a reason. It might take an extra minute to safely cross the street, but in most cities throughout the world, it's worth the wait to be safe.
