How Can You Benefit From A Clean Driving Record?

If you have a clean driving history, you can save money and take advantage of other benefits.

At Service King Germantown in Memphis, TN we hope you have a clean driving record, in order to save money and keep your driver's license in good standing.

A driving record, or a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR), is a public record of your complete driving history. All of your driving offenses will remain on your driving record for 3-10  years. How long depends on the type of the offense and the state you live in.

 Your driving record includes:

  • Identifying information, like your name, sex and address
  • Your license number, classification, status and expiration date
  • Your points, DUIs, fines, suspensions and revocations
  • Your traffic violations and convictions, such as information speeding and all traffic tickets
  • Any accidents you've been in at any point

Is your driving record confidential?

Many people ask all the time who can see a copy of my driver record, but this will depend on the laws that exist in your state. That doesn’t mean that anyone can view a copy of your record, and most states will require your consent to release your records.

In other states, the person asking for your driving record has to have all of your personal private information, such as your driver’s license number. for example. Standard background checks will include your driving record but do require your permission. In most cases, background checks access your driving record through a third-party organization, which is usually unofficial and likely contains information that is not updated.

Where can you get a copy of your driving record?

1.) The DMV

  • Request an official copy of your driving record in person or by mail through the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • As a rule, the DMV does not provide expedited processing for driving records so order it as early as you can.
  • You can always access an unofficial copy of your driving record immediately online.
  • Requesting your official driving record costs $10 in most cases, depending on where you live. Unofficial copies will likely cost you less.
  • To pay in person, DMV offices will usually accept cash, checks, money orders or ATM/debit cards, and do not accept credit cards.

2.) Auto insurance agents

  • Auto insurance agents also have full access to your driving report.
  • Agencies can review your information and subsequently provide anyone with an unofficial driving report.
  • Always ask your insurance agent for a free copy of your official driving record.

3.) Online third-party vendors

  • This is the quickest, but most expensive and often less reliable option.
  • Reports could be less accurate than driving records from the DMV or your insurance company.
  • Verify whether or not the vendor is able to obtain any official report beforehand.
  • Auto insurance companies will use driving records to determine your insurance rates.
  • Some employers will ask for your driving records during employment screening, so always check with your state employment laws to determine all of your privacy rights.
  • Courts or attorneys are authorized to use your driving record in traffic court or if related to other legal cases.
