How to Repair Your Chipped Windshield

At Service King Covington Pike in Memphis, TN we have seen people driving all over town with a chipped windshield.  It isn't safe any time of year, but especially dangerous in colder weather when the days are shorter and the weather is highly unpredictable. It's always hard to see clearly when driving after dark during the winter. To make it even worse, driving with a  chipped windshield is illegal and in many states, they can lead to tickets and fines

Torrential rains, snow, hail and sleet that make the roadways dangerous can decrease visibility significantly. To stay safe when you're on the roadway, it's always a good idea to repair a chipped windshield, especially during the colder winter months.

Winter Driving With a Chipped Windshield Is Very Dangerous

Chipped windshields are likely to crack on impact, which can put you and your passengers at greater risk of injury.  If you have any experience driving on perilous winter roads, you know that clear visibility is so important.

It's a scary formula. Your vehicle will lose almost 1/3rd of its overall structural integrity if you are involved in an accident because the windshield provides approximately 30% of its structural strength.

With a compromised windshield, it can lead to other problems down the road. In many cases, a chipped windshield will cause the airbags to not deploy properly because an intact windshield acts as an important support for your airbags. If the glass ever fails, the airbags can expand out through the opening, instead of toward front seat occupants.

Chipped Windshields Are Always More Vulnerable to Colder Temperatures

A damaged windshield is 60%  more likely to crack once the temperature reaches roughly 32 degrees. When the mercury ever drops below 14 degrees, a chip is 80% more susceptible to cracking than it is in when the weather is warmer.

Extreme temperature changes put more undue stress on a windshield too. When it's cold outside and you turn on the car's defroster, a chipped windshield can crack. Using a de-icer or a plastic scraper to clear the ice away from the glass can also lead to a chip to crack and spread dramatically.

Repairing a Chipped Windshield Before It's Too Late

Getting a windshield chip fixed now can save you from the added expense of a full windshield replacement later. Ensure your safety and get a repair quote online, then make an appointment and get your chip repaired promptly.
