Why is the Color of Your Car Important?

The world of automotive colors has changed in many ways within the last 10-30 years, resulting to a larger inventory of different, exciting colors and new cutting-edge color matching technology. With colors that are more precise and brighter than ever, car owners have more to choose from and the overall quality sets a higher standard.

Painting your car requires some thought and planning to say the least. Minivans, for instance, don’t look that good when painted with bright reds and yellows, but high-performance sports cars look great featuring those hues.

Your car's color can also affect how people perceive you and your vehicle. Is it true that bright red vehicles get pulled over by the police more often for violations like speeding? In the end, does the color of your car truly matter when it comes to avoiding collisions, car insurance rates, the vehicle's resale value, and/or just simply keeping it clean?  According to car industry experts, these factors all work together, so now all of us at Service King Knoxville in Knoxville, TN are going to  explore in more detail the role a vehicle's color plays, and why.

Multiple studies have discovered that color is an important factor when consumers  shop for a wide range of products, including automobiles. Performed by the social research firm Yankelovich Partners discovered back in 2016 that 39% of all consumers in the U.S. would rather switch brands altogether if they couldn’t find a given product (including cars) in their preferred color.  According to retail car sales numbers, the most popular colors across all categories for new and used vehicles sold annually in North America breakdown this way:

  • Silver: 23%
  • White: 15%
  • Black: 12%

For non-commercial trucks, SUVs and minivans, white is the most popular color, and for all other passenger vehicles silver captured the top spot. Black also very popular vehicle color, but by far it’s also the most dangerous in terms of collisions, including fatal accidents. Studies listing DMV accident statistics report that black vehicles are 47% more likely to be involved in accidents of all types than any other color, with12% more likely than white ones during peak driving daylight hours.  Why? Because black projects a very low-visibility signature to other drivers, especially around dusk or dawn. Other dangerous colors with similar “camouflage” characteristics include gray, silver, dark blue and dark green.

Fortunately for car owners who own black vehicles, most insurance companies are color blind when it comes to devising their rates.  Instead, they charge premiums based on a vehicle's brand, model, year, body type and even engine size, along with the operator's personal driving record.

To play it safe, if you decide to paint your vehicle a different color, contact your insurance agent immediately or check your policy to make sure it stays valid. And for the question we posed earlier in this blog, the answer is an emphatic no. Bright red cars don’t get ticketed by the police for speeding more often than other assorted colors do, so it's an urban tale and something not to believe.
