What is an OEM Certified Shop?

Today’s collision repair industry is evolving at a rapid rate, and as vehicles become more sophisticated, repair shops and body technicians need to stay on top of all of the latest procedures and technologies out there. Although there’s no standard certification or set of requirements that make one body shop better than any other collision repairer, most repairs require specific knowledge and extensive training.

At Service King Bartlett in Memphis, TN, we are answering questions about what is an OEM certified body shop?

You’re probably already familiar with the acronym OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) that refers to the factory that designed and manufactured the parts in the first place. Roughly 15 years ago, collision shops started obtaining OE certifications and consumers used them to select a body shop.

An OEM certified body shop has been through an OEM certification program and meets all of its stringent requirements. While different carmakers may have different requirements in order for a shop to become certified, these programs are customarily costly and very time-consuming, and any certified collision shop that has made that investment and values the quality of their work.

Can any shop be OE certified?

In most cases, different OEMs have dissimilar requirements, but normally certification programs aren’t cheap for any shop. They could require on-site training, either at the carmaker’s location or at the body shop with a certified trainer. Customarily, OEM certified shops are required to use strictly OEM parts, meaning that any collision part replaced on a car in a certified shop will be the exact same parts and produced by the same manufacturer who made the original automobile.

How can I find an OEM certified shop?

The main purpose of OEM certifications is to keep shops and repairs to adhere to the same standards that are set by the manufacturers. As these certifications become more and more prevalent, there are so many different OEMs and paint companies are sponsoring their own certifications.

What are the benefits of OEM certifications?

To put it in simple terms, OEM certified shops are held to factory standards whenever repairing a vehicle that original manufacturers are held as standards used when building the car. The same replacement parts will be used accompanied by the same safety, emissions, environmental, and quality practices that will be used. OEM certified shops already have world-class procedures in place that meet factory requirements to obtain the parts, make the repairs, and get you on your way.
