Spring Driving Tips for Adolescent Drivers

If winter 2018 was your first winter with an adolescent driver, you’re probably relieved that spring is finally here. Hopefully, your teenage driver didn't encounter too much ice, sleet, snow, or whiteout conditions and avoiding any accidents or tickets during the toughest season for anyone to drive.

At Service King Bartlett in Memphis, TN we know that teenage drivers need a little more mentoring and training than adult drivers do, so we're delighted to be sharing this blog with you. It does not matter what season it is, because driving for young people  is always tricky for rookie drivers.

Springtime driving challenges are many and can include:

  • Deep and Dangerous Potholes
  • Seriously deteriorated windshield wipers
  • Scary Hydroplaning
  • Orange constructions barrels all over the road

Dangerous Potholes

Potholes can cause some considerable damage to your vehicle if your teenage driver hits them straight on at a high speed. This can often include damage to your tires, rims, suspension, exhaust systems and steering as well Every driver out there should be leery of what’s hiding under what looks like a harmless puddle of water. Always try to navigate around a big puddle if you can safely do so, but never swerve as this could place you in the path of an oncoming car, SUV or truck.

Neglected Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are always a critical component, but they are often neglected. They take a beating from the sun, serious cold, snow, sleet, hail and rain. Make certain you change your windshield wipers every 5-6 months, always ensuring optimal visibility. Many accidents occur because drivers can't clearly see the road and other obstacles in front of them.

Perilous Hydroplaning

During rainy conditions, hydroplaning can become a real problem. Hydroplaning is always a function of speed, inadequate tire tread and standing water. Hydroplaning takes place when water on the road causes your tires to lose contact with the road. This loss of contact will result in a loss of steering and braking.

Always make sure to regularly check your vehicle’s tires to ascertain that they have adequate tread to push the water away from your tires. In addition, never use cruise control on a wet surface to avoid serious accidents.

Roadway Construction

In many states, orange road construction barrels are now appearing on the freeway. It’s imperative to obey reduced speed limit signs in order to keep the construction workers safe. It’s also very important to watch for changing traffic patterns at all times.
