The 5 Safest Cities for Bicyclists

In some cities, you’re safer when it’s time to ride your bike. This list that was originally released by ADT in 2018, is 100% based on data collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)  and the highly-regarded League of American Bicyclists. Looking at these statistics that include the number of commuter cyclists, the amount of total fatal crashes and the existence bike lanes, ADT determined that these are the five safest cities for biking in the United States, brought to you by Service King Deer Valley in Phoenix, AZ.

1. Davis, California: This Northern California city has long been a major leader in bicyclist safety. In fact, WIRED magazine published a story a few years back titled: "What makes a city bike friendly? Ask Davis, California." "Bike City USA," also known as Davis, shows how long-term planning can make a city safer for cyclists. In 2014, Davis released an 88-page page update to its City’s Bicycle Action Plan. It includes sections on everything from diversity, gender equality in cycling to viable information on its bicycling education programs for children.

2. Berkeley, California: Berkeley is known for hippies, the Summer of Love and its love for its bicyclists. According to the City of Berkeley, roughly 10% of the city's employed adults that their bikes to work, which is 10 times the national average. Berkeley is less than a total of 18 square miles, but it has more than 1,000 bicycle racks. In fact, citizens can even request additional bicycle racks and track through requests online.

3. Boulder, Colorado: Boulder is so committed to bicyclist safety that it clears bicycle lanes before roads after a snowfall. According to the City of Boulder, most crashes between bicyclists and motorists occur at crosswalks or intersections, and more than 60% result from drivers not properly checking for other cyclists. For that reason, Boulder has implemented its unique 3-2-1 campaign.

4. Eugene, Oregon: On its town website, the City of Eugene says it has bicycle lanes, bike boulevards, and off-street trails to get bike riders where ever they need to go, regardless of wherever they live. Residents can either look online or stop in any bike shop to pick up a free bicycling map.

5. Palo Alto, California:  It's no coincidence that Northern California rules this list. In fact, the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) named California the 3rd most bike-friendly state last year giving it the highest ratings in infrastructure and funding, education and encouragement, policies and programs, and evaluation as well as planning.  While the abovementioned cities are leading the way when it comes to total bicycle safety, others are falling way behind.
