What is Collision Repair Blueprinting?

Whenever you bring in your car, truck or SUV for collision repair, the process begins with an initial estimate (also called an appraisal) that provides a rough ballpark estimate of the work required. Here from all of us at Service King Round Rock in Austin, TX is a brief description of what collision repair blueprinting is and how it affects you and your car after a crash.

Most car owners don’t know what the collision repair blueprinting involves, but they can rest assured that any reputable body shop will blueprint your vehicle before doing any work on it without exception.

To the naked eye, the damage might look harmless, but if any of it is hidden, thorough blueprinting can extend repair times as new parts are ordered, for example. Blueprinting will often address these issues by performing a thorough check of the vehicle and building a complete repair plan that includes everything, including the right parts and precision OE-certified repairs.

The Ins and Outs of the Collision Repair Blueprinting Process

The blueprinting process starts by recording a wealth of pertinent information about the car, including the VIN, mileage and a specific paint color code. This is done using a sophisticated scan tool that is connected to the vehicle to conduct a quick check of all its various electronic systems.

At the outset, the shop’s estimator will perform a quick visual inspection of the exterior of the vehicle, starting at the point furthest from the direct impact. Changes in the panel gaps will always indicate damage, but some newer cars can have serious structural damage that won’t often show up on the surface.

Next, the doors and the trunk are usually opened and shut to see if they’re misaligned to any degree. The estimator then moves to the inside of the car and judiciously looks over the steering column, the headrests, and all of the seat belts for various signs of different damage. Along the outside of the vehicle, measurements are customarily taken off of the wheel positions, and if they’re off, the car’s undercarriage will need to be inspected for signs of bending and twisting.

Now that the estimator has all of the data that he needs to determine the general areas that have been damaged, parts can be ordered and the blueprinting portion of the repair is now complete. Let the repair begin!
