Not All Backover Crashes are Fender Benders

Backover accidents often take place when a driver backs out of a driveway or parking spot and hits a pedestrian with tragic results in many cases. At Service King Southwest Frwy in Houston, TX we often see the results of backover crashes and luckily most of them are fender benders, although many can be more serious than that.

NHTSA discovered that children under five years of age account for 31% of backover deaths annually, and adults 70 years old or older account for 26% of all backover fatalities. With vehicles that have backup cameras and other safety systems installed, NHTSA estimates that 60 to 70 lives can be saved every year once the entire on-road vehicle fleet is equipped with rear visibility systems.

Backup Cameras are No Longer Just an Option

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) isn't just casually discussing the backover crash problem nationwide but is actually taking action. Within the last two years, backover accidents have been studied in depth and several safety advocacy groups are looking for viable ways to alleviate them.

Last year, the NHTSA issued a final ruling that requires rear visibility technology in all new passenger cars, light truck and buses both personal and commercial that weigh under 10,000 pounds starting by May of last year, in order to significantly reduce the risk of death and serious injury caused by backover accidents. These rulings will make backover accidents the exception and hopefully eliminate them over time.

This rule requires that all newer vehicles have to be equipped with rear visibility technology that considerably expands the field of view directly behind the car within a 10 ft. by 20 ft. zone that allows the driver to detect areas directly behind the vehicle. These systems must also meet other requirements including things such as image size, response time, durability and deactivation, just to mention a few.

Technology is Already Saving Lives

One extremely positive factor related to backover crashes is the fact that visibility technology is being more sophisticated and effective quickly, with more new cars featuring rearview cameras and other components. By embracing these cutting-edge technologies and devising state laws to mandate their implementation, the future of fewer and fewer backover crashes is more likely than ever.

Unfortunately, backover crashes are here to stay, but, if the NHTSA and other organizations can work to cut down on severe backover accidents, injuries and fatalities, that is an excellent step in the right direction.
