What is Post-Collision Emotional Trauma?

Many war veterans talk about PTSD, and it's a serious problem for many former members of the military all over the country, but it is also an issue for people who have been in serious automotive accidents.

At Service King Southwest Frwy in Houston, TX we always like to deal with the tough topics, and that's why we are discussing post-collision emotional trauma in this blog in the hopes that it will help people.

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently reported that more than six million vehicle collisions occur in the U.S. daily. So, if you’ve just been involved in any type of car accident, don’t over think it and don’t stress it at all possible, because you are definitely not alone.

Most individuals who experience a car collision at any point in their lives know what to do. First, they need to call the police, contact the tow company and then the insurance company, but not many of these folks are willing to openly discuss post-collision emotional trauma.

Learning how to deal with the aftermath of a vehicle accident is very similar to someone who grieves after losing a loved one. Even if no one was killed or seriously injured, you're no longer with your car for even a short time. If you’re having trouble with emotions after a collision, here are some coping strategies to help you successfully deal with your feelings and effectively manage a wide range of emotions.

Communicate About the Accident

If you are going through the gamut of emotions, from depression to uncertainty and all the way to angst, insomnia, mood swings, or other highly negative symptoms as a result of  a car accident, don't keep your feelings bottled up, because it will only make it worse.

One of the best ways to release your stress is through open communication. Whether it’s talking to a member of your family, a close friend, your physician or therapist, communicating is an extremely healthy way to deal with your emotions. Some folks choose to talk to a psychiatrist about post-collision trauma, and that’s a good way to manage your emotions. Seeking out the assistance of a trained and licensed professional is a smart idea because they can often give you objective answers and viable solutions.

Be Healthy to Stay Happy

Car accidents can cause physical and psychological harm to your body. Some strategies to cope include the basics principles of good living--eat well, exercise a lot, and get enough sleep each night. Overeating, sleeping too many hours, avoiding contact with other people and being housebound for extended periods are some the standard symptoms of depression, and if they go on and on, you should get some advice and help.

Stay Busy

Try to stay engaged by picking up a new and fun hobby. Reading a book, playing chess or backgammon, gardening, exercising or a number of other activities can bring you happiness while keeping your mind off the accident.

If you can follow any of these suggestions, you'll be able to get past the problems associated with post-accident trauma and continue on with a productive and happy life. The main thing is to tell yourself time and again that accidents will happen and that’s why they call them exactly that. Don’t ever beat yourself up over a car accident, because they are a part of life.
