Road Trip Apps To Keep The Kids Entertained

Road Trip Apps To Keep The Kids Entertained

Although it has become a cliché over the years, the dreaded phrase "are we there yet?" is still heard from time to time. Trust me; as a parent I've heard it myself on more than one occasion. And let's face it: road trips can be terribly boring for a kid. As many times as you point out interesting landmarks or natural points of interest the best you can hope for is a halfhearted "yeah, uh-huh."

In today's digital age attention spans certainly haven't gotten any longer. Kids rely on phones, tablets, and handhold gaming devices to make sitting in one place for hours tolerable. Whether you little one is two or twelve, here are a few apps that can help alleviate the boredom.

1. Minecraft Pocket Edition. It says ages five and up, but if your child is anything like mine, three and a half plus should be good. Minecraft is a massive sandbox game that allows you to do a broad range of activities. You can start a farm, make an awesome castle, or dig a mine till your heart's content. There is nearly unlimited potential to create. It's available for Windows, Android, and Apple devices. It's well worth the $6.99 for the Windows and Android versions and $9.99 for Apple.

2. For something a little more traditional, there's iStoryTime. It's simply a platform for kid's audio books and it's aimed at the target audience of three and up. The app comes with four free storybooks including The Giant Smurf, Madagascar, Ice Age, and Robin Hood. Additional audio books are available via in-app purchase and through monthly or annual subscriptions. It's available for Apple, Android, and Windows devices.

3. For kids ten and up there's Zombie road trip. It's a deceptively simple game that includes one objective: stay ahead of the zombie hordes or get your brains eaten! It has multiple terrains, landscapes, and vehicles to keep kids attention for hours. It's available for Android and Apple devices and is free with in-app purchases.

Armed with these apps, your next road trip should be a breeze...or at least a little quieter.
