Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) Systems Save Lives Daily

Among the twenty automakers who agreed to put Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) into almost every new car, van, SUV or truck by September 2022, ten of them are already putting this key safety feature into more than 1/2 the vehicles they have in production

At Service King Park Cities in Dallas, TX we are always excited when we hear about high-tech safety features that are constantly being developed by car manufacturers worldwide

Several national vehicle safety organizations recently negotiated an agreement under the theory that consumers would significantly benefit from the technology faster if compliance is voluntary rather than mandated by law. Consumer Reports strongly supported the deal and agreed to monitor carmaker compliance while also urging the NHTSA to set compulsory rules for AEB if auto manufacturers will dragging their feet in any way.

A vehicle equipped with forward collision warning and AEB can anticipate a potential collision with a car in front and, if the driver does not react in time, can brake for him or her. The OEs promised that AEB would be made standard on almost every model except for heavy-duty pickup trucks.

Some carmakers are making clear progress toward reaching the final goal. 5 of them put AEB in more than 85% of the autos they produced within the next three years.

Tesla leads that list, with a full 100% of their models getting AEB during that time designated period. Also very near the top of the list were Mercedes-Benz with 96%, Volvo with 93%, Toyota (and its luxury brand, Lexus) with 90%, and Audi with 87%.

Five automakers, Porsche, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Ford, Jaguar Land Rover and Mitsubishi, put low-speed AEB in 10% or fewer of the models they produced during that same time period.

As for making AEB standard in their models, only two automakers—Tesla and Volvo—have done so on all versions of their models for this year. Four other car manufacturers—FCA, Maserati/Alfa Romeo and Mitsubishi—are not making AEB standard.

Some carmakers who didn't put AEB in most of their automobiles produced from 2017-2018 do have it as standard equipment on more than 1/2 their 2019 models.

For example, 49% of the BMWs built last year had AEB, but 82% of all 2019 models will get it as standard equipment. Hyundai (and its Genesis luxury brand) put AEB in 18% of vehicles last year, but 62% of their 2019 models will get it as accepted standard equipment.

Automatic Emergency Braking is an innovation that is already saving lives and will continue to do so for many years to come. This is a big deal and that's why more and more OEs are integrating AEB into their new vehicles.
