Eaton Engineers Strive For A More Efficient Diesel Engine
Diesel engines have become a little out of fashion lately. They are traditionally less efficient and get less mileage compared to their gasoline counterparts while emitting a lot more nitrogen pollutants. Engineers at Eaton are attempting to rectify this, and in doing this extend the life of the diesel engine.
They are doing this through cylinder deactivation. By taking cylinders off line, the remaining cylinders will run hotter and work harder. This will bring the engine up to optimal operating temperatures faster. Since the catalytic converter requires the exhaust to be of a certain temperature to operate efficiently, this solution would alleviate the biggest downfall of the diesel engine as well as the largest ecological complaint.
This process will lead to an overall reduction in emissions of up to 35%.
Not only that, but it will increase fuel efficiency without severely impacting power. if this technology could be implemented in all diesel vehicles the impact on the environment could be massive!
We at Service King Southside in San Antonio, TX will be watching developments closely!
