Professional OE Repair Certifications Hit the Big Leagues!

How do you know you that you can trust a body shop technician with your car, truck or SUV? One of the best ways is to do your research and look for a list of professional automotive certifications. If a body tech has an impressive list of certifications from organizations like ASE and/or I-CAR you can put your mind and ease and get that coveted peace of mind that all of us desire.

At Service King DeZavala in San Antonio, TX, we realize the importance of these certifications, and that’s why we’re sharing this blog with you.

ASE: Automotive Service Excellence

After 2 full years of work experience or 2 years of education and 1 full year of work experience, body technicians can take standardized tests through ASE in order to be certified in their particular field. Only 2 out of 3 technicians pass their first test on their very first attempt. ASE testing covers more than 50 subcategories spanning the entire collision repair industry from passenger cars all the way to heavy-duty trucks.

4 of these exams cover auto body repair:

– Painting & Refinishing Skills

– Non-Structural Analysis and Damage Repair Skills

– Structural Analysis and Damage Repair Skills

– Mechanical and Electrical Component Skills

ASE also features a certification for damage analysis and estimating. This tests the technician’s ability to quickly assess the damage and create an accurate estimate as a result.

Car technology changes at a rapid rate, so technicians must regularly retake updated tests every 5 years in order to stay certified. These tests are usually written and periodically updated by groups comprised of experienced technicians, parts manufacturers, administrators and educators.

I-CAR Platinum and Gold Class

The Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) was founded back in 1979 to improve the overall quality of work coming out of body shops. It’s run by an alliance of shops, insurance companies, car manufacturers, equipment suppliers, parts manufacturers and educational services that work in conjunction to find new ways to improve repair methods.

I-CAR has 4 core roles that need to be covered by technicians in a working collision repair facility:

  • Estimator Skills
  • Non-structural Technician Skills
  • Structural Technician Skills
  • Refinish Technician Skills

In addition, I-CAR offers training in these 3 areas to improve overall shop performance:

  • Production Management Skills
  • Aluminum Structural Technician Skills
  • Electrical/Mechanical Technician Skills

So, before you decide to take your vehicle to any shop, make certain that their techs are properly trained through ASE and/or I-CAR.
