Cool Facts about Cars

They're fun and funky and something to think about. We call them car factoids and they're brought to you by all of us at Service King DeZavala in San Antonio TX--a truly car-loving shop.

So, here we go. Some of these are shocking while others are simply entertaining:

  • People using their cell phones while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes annually.
  • The brand name “BMW” stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke and/or Bavarian Motor Works.
  • The brand name “Hyundai" translates into “the present age” or “modernity” in Korean.
  • The automobile company Mazda’s name derives from “Ahura Mazda,” the Zoroastrian God of simple reason and deep intelligence. The stylized “M” in the company's logo symbolizes flight toward the future.
  • Before the advent of the auto industry, more than 15,000 horses were left to rot on the streets of New York year after year. Consequently, cars were seen as an environmentally friendly alternative.
  • The 6 stars in the Subaru logo are a reference to the Pleiades, a cluster of stars within the constellation Taurus. "Subaru" is also Taurus’s name in Japanese.
  • Volvo is Latin for “I roll.” Its brand logo is a circle with an arrow pointing directly out, which is an ancient chemical symbol representing iron. It's also one of the oldest ideograms in Western culture.
  • Nearly 1/2 of all injuries and deaths in motor vehicle accidents could easily be prevented by simply wearing a seat belt.
  • When Volvo invented the modern 3-point seatbelt 50 years ago, they made the patent open and free to all auto manufacturers. Seat belts now save more than 13,000 lives in this country each year.
  • Mercedes’ 3-point star in their logo represents its mission to make transportation easier on land, water and in the air.
  • The intersecting ovals in the Toyota brand's logo symbolize the trust between Toyota and its owners. The ovals also represent the letter “T” for Toyota.
  • Almost 1.3 million people die in car collisions each year around the world, which equals about 3,287 fatalities a day, while an additional 20-50 million people are injured or disabled annually.
  • Vehicle crashes rank as the ninth leading cause of death and accounts for 2.2% of all fatalities globally.
  • Over 250 million car tires are discarded annually.
  • Car wrecks are the #1 cause of death for Americans under 35.
  • There are more cars than people in the City of Los Angeles.
  • The inventor of cruise control was completely blind.
  • The car with the highest mileage covered a grand total of 2,850,000 miles.
  • It is a criminal offense to drive around in a dirty car in in the City of Moscow in Russia.
  • In 1941, Henry Ford made an automobile out of soybeans.
