The Dangers of Drunk Driving Will Scare You

You’ve been in an accident, so you gathered up a few estimates, and found a body shop to work with, and now you’re ready to get your vehicle back! People from your chosen shop have mentioned something called pre and post-collision diagnostic repair scans, but you’re not sure that it’s needed. Are these scans a must or something you can opt-out on?

Here at Service King South Ft. Worth in Fort Worth, TX, we know the value and importance of pre and post-collision diagnostic repair scans, so that’s why we are sharing this information with you.

What exactly is a diagnostic scan?

A diagnostic scan looks at each and every computer system, sensor, camera or automatic feature in your vehicle to make certain that they’re working properly. Today’s modern vehicles contain so much technology that they often have hundreds or even thousands of computer systems working in conjunction to operate things such as cruise control, airbags monitors, rear backup cameras, blind-spot sensors and/or lane departure warnings.

Every vehicle that was produced since 1996 can benefit from a diagnostic scan.

The mid-90s brought us the first automobile with computer systems that didn’t trigger any dashboard warning lights. The number of computers in vehicles today is so much higher than the number of dashboard warning lights because basically there isn’t room to put that many warning lights in a vehicle.

Today’s computer systems are so highly diverse and change so quickly, and they aren’t standard among different carmakers, which means that there isn’t one single scanning system that works for every car.

Your insurance policy may not want to pay for pre and post-collision diagnostic repair scans.

Insurance companies and auto manufacturers disagree about when diagnostic repair scans are mandatory, which is hard to believe. Most Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), such as Ford, Honda, and GM, have released multiple statements saying that diagnostic scans are necessary for most vehicles after an accident to ensure complete passenger safety. Car insurance companies desire more clarity and specific guidelines so that they won’t be paying for unnecessary scans or scans that don’t find any significant errors.

OEMs release repair guidelines for every vehicle.

Every auto manufacturer (OEM) publishes repair procedures for every year, make and model of every car they produce. Your body technician should always follow all of the OEM repair procedures. If these procedures state that a diagnostic scan is needed, it’s likely for your safety and a must.

If your insurance company rejects pre and post-collision diagnostic repair scans, it might be time to look for another insurer.
