Basic Rules for Teenage Drivers

The dream of driving for the first time opens up a whole new world for teenage drivers when they get their licenses. For them, driving means freedom and an expanded universe. In the real world, driving is less about privilege and more about responsibility.

At  Service King Copperfield in Houston, TX we are happy to share this information with you, especially if you're a teenager or the parent of a teenager.

While state laws differ, legal restrictions are designed to make driving safer for young, inexperienced drivers. Parents play a role in setting limits on newly driving teens. The responsibility for safe driving falls squarely on the shoulders of parents. Before a teenager is behind the wheel for the first time, they should be informed of the rules for driving, and the consequences that go along with not following those rules.

Driving is a Privilege

Adults who abuse traffic laws are subject to losing the ability to drive, and teens are no different. Parents should consider placing requirements on driving privileges like maintaining grades, completing chores at home, and the use of electronic monitoring technology to observe driving habits from a distance.

Electronics in the Car

Phones are not permitted. This one is non-negotiable. At no time is it even remotely safe to look at a phone behind the wheel. Texting, checking social media, even answering an incoming phone call requires the driver to take their eyes off the road for up to 5 seconds. Those few seconds can mean the difference between life and death, for everyone on the road.

Seatbelts

Young drivers are statistically the least likely to buckle up. The risks go far beyond a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt. The rule should extend to the driver and all passengers.

Under the Influence

Teens should understand that unsafe driving begins long before they feel drunk. Driving under the influence of any amount of booze or any other substance is hazardous and will not be tolerated.

Showing Off and Speeding

The chances of being killed in a collision are greatest for the youngest drivers. Too often teen drivers think they can drive fast and drive safe. If a teen driver is pulled over while speeding, the responsibility should be on them to pay any fines, court costs, and increased insurance rates.

In addition to these rules, parents must ensure their child is aware of special driving conditions. Winter weather driving, for example, requires skill that comes from experience. Even light levels at sunrise and sunset affect the ability to be safe on the road.
