Car Games Can Keep Long Road Trips Sane
You’re headed out for an epic road trip and you have a nice supply of snacks for the kids, but have you considered doing a few car games to keep everyone informed? Here are a few ideas from all of us at Service King Bandera in San Antonio, TX:
The Classic License Plate Game
“Punch buggy” is not in vogue anymore. Also known as “punch bug”, “punch car”, “punch dub”, “piggy punch”, “slug bug”, or “beetle bug” it’s a car game generally played by kids in which participants punch each other on the arm when they first see a Volkswagen Beetle while shouting out "Punch buggy!" or "Slug bug!" in reference to the Beetle's nickname--the Bug. The trick of the Classic License Plate Game is to find a plate that will represent the opposite of your destination. For instance, if you’re headed to soak up the sun in the Sunshine State, make it your goal to locate the license plate from the northern-most point.
Tellin’ Stories
Try your hand at something a tad more fun and creative for this one. Have the car’s driver start off a story; opening with something such as “Once upon a time, there was a big gassy dragon who guarded a 6-story castle,” to start a story. Operating in a clockwise direction, have each of your vehicle’s passengers contribute a few lines to your developing story. This can be an awesome game for children, who have the ability to re-direct your story in a brand-new direction and with hopefully hilarious results!
Singing the Song Game
Nothing is better for road apathy than music! Call upon the musical notes to keep your family entertained and engaged for many years to come. There is a wide range of different ways that you can play this game--you, as the car’s driver, can shuffle through your passengers’ music library and guess the song’s title or the name of the artist. To raise the challenge up a little more, pick a radio station you haven’t heard previously, and attempt to guess the song title before someone will yell “Yowza” can tell you the full answer. Who knows--you may even find your new favorite song using this method! But right after you’ve reached hour six of “The Wheels on the Bus” and the funky license plate game, we won’t ever judge you if you whip out the iPads loaded with movies to keep the kids amused.
