The Best Navigation Apps For iPhone

Smart phones have improved in leaps and bounds over the last several years, and along with those advances have come some amazing utility. Smart phones have replaced so many other devices that it's hard to remember a time when I had to manually hit a snooze button or look for a calculator. I even remember meticulously re-folding my glove compartment maps and the purchase of my first Thomas Guide.  Now my phone can tell me the optimal route with no effort on my part. It can even re-route me based on on real-time traffic conditions, and that's just the tip of the iceberg as far as features go! In 2018 we now have a plethora of options on which navigation app we can download based on exactly what we want. Offline maps? Indicators where speed traps or red light cameras are? 3d navigation? All of these are available in the right apps for your iPhone. Here are a few for your consideration.

1. Google Maps - It may seem strange to recommend the default Android navigation app for iPhone, but it's really very good at what it does. Turn by turn navigation, the ability to download offline maps, and frequent updates make this one a top pick. The interface is a little bland but uncluttered. It also has several options for other functionality like the ability to find a restaurant or gas station along your route.
2. Apple Maps - Sometimes all you need is already at your fingertips. The default navigation for iPhone isn't bad, but it isn't great either. It gives the same basic functions as the others such as turn-by-turn navigation, voice assistance, and real-time traffic conditions. That's about where it ends though. The interface is a little lacking n comparison to other apps, but to get from a to b it is serviceable.
3. Waze - Available for a variety of platforms, Waze has become a favorite with navigation enthusiasts. It's packed with features you may never even use. Of course it has the basics, but it also includes handy features that'll tell you where speed traps are, warn you if your current speed gets over a certain threshold, and point out red light cameras. It can also pull from a Gas Buddy-like database to find you the cheapest gas. Best part? It's as free as the previous two options.
4. Garmin - One of the biggest names in navigation devices has made the transition into the mobile world. How exactly it's still around, though, is beyond me. From what I've experienced, it includes the basic functions of any navigation app, but with a really beautiful interface. That's about it, though. Oh, and it's around $50.00.
5.  Navigon - I really hate to pay for something I can essentially get for free. This being said, I really love Navigon. Both the 2D and 3D interfaces are gorgeous and it's packed with more features than I've ever seen. Will the average driver probably ever need all of them? Not likely, but anyone who spends a large piece of their lives in their car will come to appreciate some of what Navigon has to offer. At $50.00, it's really worth the money if you're looking for a Swiss army knife of a navigation app.

With dozens of viable options it's hard to pick the right choice for everyone.

It all depends on exactly what you want and need, as well as what price point is right for you.

With a little searching and experimentation, though, you'll find that there may be a better option than what you're currently using.
