The LEGO Volvo Has That Wow Factor

A Volvo XC90 is a full-sized replica of Volvo’s award-winning SUV. Instead of glass. rubber and metal, this amazing creation is constructed with LEGO modeling bricks. It was on display at LEGOLAND in Carlsbad, California near San Diego for one full year before it was transported to the Volvo Museum for permanent display.

Did you play with LEGOs when you were a kid? What did you build and was it a learning experience? If you did, all of us at Service King Babcock in San Antonio, TX are pleased to share this fun story with you.

The name "LEGO" is an abbreviation of a pair of Danish words--"leg godt", which means "play well". The LEGO Group was founded back in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen, and was passed from father to son. The company is currently owned by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the founder. LEGO has come a long way over the past 87 years - all the way from a small carpenter’s workshop to a modern, worldwide enterprise that is now one of the largest toy manufacturers on the planet.

To build the LEGO Volvo, Volvo provided CAD drawings of a real XC90. The LEGO designers then converted the CAD drawings using its patented LEGOizer software to conceptualize the brick design. It took almost 10 full weeks for the team consisting of three LEGO designers to design and construct the brick XC90 including a computer model and with detailed illustrations.

The LEGO Volvo XC90 was built one brick at a time using the standard LEGO modeling bricks with zero other components used, apart from the model's chassis, wheels and five tires, including the spare.

"LEGO and Volvo lead their own markets, so it's fitting that these two inconic companies have joined forces to entertain the world," Car expert Ted Gehrke said. "This amazing creation is truly a must-see and a huge undertaking!"

About the Volvo Museum

Ever since the opening in 1995, the museums' collection has continued to grow at a steady rate. Apart from all of the Volvo products on display, there is also a comprehensive archive of historical documents and images, providing a one-of-a-kind view into the story of what became one of Sweden’s most successful businesses ever.

The purpose of the Volvo Museum is to preserve the history of the Volvo Company and make it known to the general public. The museum is operated by the Volvo Car Group and the Volvo Group, that encompasses Volvo Trucks, Volvo Buses, Volvo Penta and Volvo Construction Equipment.
