Will Internal Vehicle Cameras Become Commonplace With New Models?

Will Internal Vehicle Cameras Become Commonplace With New Models?

With backup cameras now mandatory in all U.S. models and 360 degree dashboard cameras on the market, it was only a matter of time until this technology turned inward. While this technology has been commonly used by ride share drivers for a few years, one manufacturer has discovered the benefit of being able to watch what's going on in you back seat.

The 2018 model of the Honda Odyssey includes their patented CabinWatch technology, a ceiling-mounted camera accessed by a dash-mounted monitor integrated into the vehicle's entertainment system. It can clearly show the second and third row seating as well as zoom in and out by pinching and expanding like on a cell phone. It even includes night vision. This allows you to check on your passengers at any time without having to turn around. Or reprimand your kids on the go. Or check to see if a horror movie killer is about to strike from the back seat.

While this technology is situationally useful, it does bring up safety concerns. By adding another feature to the entertainment system, drivers may be tempted to make adjustments while the vehicle is in motion, leading to potential accidents. Any time a driver's eyes are taken off the road there is the potential for harm.

Will this technology catch on? Similar systems are available online and can be installed by a local auto repair or body shop. It's always best to check with the experts first, so if you're interested, check with a shop such as Service King Mesa in Mesa, AZ to see how it's done!
