Best Racing Video Games For Modern Consoles

While the games yesteryear have a special place in my heart, the advances made in video game technology have made the games available on home consoles orders of magnitude better than the most cutting-edge games I spent a small fortune on at the arcade.

There are 4 major ways to play racing games at home today. You have computer, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PS4. While there are often crossovers between consoles, I'll attempt to touch on a major pick for each.

Forza Motorsport 7 is the most visually stunning of the bunch. It does one thing and it does it well: it creates a great racing environment with engrossing physics. For more real-world environments you can also try Forza Horizon 3. It has more of an open world feel with graphics that are also far better than average. It also has the added benefit of allowing you to wreck aspects of the amazingly-rendered world around you. It's available for both Xbox One and Windows 10 (you'd better have at least one heavy graphics card installed.)

Project Cars 2 is available for PS4, Windows 10, and Xbox One. It excels in creating a realistic experience. It's also highly customizable in your automotive choices. It's also unforgiving in its physics and painfully difficult overall. 

Drive Club is exclusive to the PS4 and it's a shame. It's release was delayed drastically. So far, in fact, that it was supposed to be a release title! It's slick and stunning in all the right ways. It also has a massive replay factor and the ability to unlock cars and is highly competitive. It's a must play.

The only one on the list for the Nintendo Switch is Mario Kart 8. The latest installment of one of y childhood favorites pulls out all the stops. It has new characters, has returned the classic battle mode, and is as impressive as you'd expect from a modern console game. You also have the advantage of being able to detach the unit from the base and take it with you for a portable experience.

I can't begin to describe how much home gaming has advanced from the first racing game I played on the Magnavox Odyssey 2. Back then they didn't even refer to systems in "bits." My visits to the arcade with my older brother were the only times where I got to see the real "graphically advanced" games. Now all I have to do is turn on my PS4 and drive into the sunset. I can't help but wonder what the future of racing on home consoles will look like!
