Community First! Car Care in Austin, Texas began with an idea. They hired a staff compromised of formerly homeless technicians. All of them lived in a development in east Travis County for the chronically homeless called Community First! Village and had been in and out of the direst of straits for a good portion of their lives. They have known the lowest of financial lows and risen to become valuable members of their community.
"When they were out on the streets—and all these guys were at one time on the streets—they did not receive that respect and they didn't have that dignity that they have working here," said the shop's director, Larry Crawford.
The initiative is a collaboration between Charles Maund Toyota and the company that operates Community First! village, Mobile Loaves and Fishes. All of the technicians were trained and the tools donated through the efforts of both. The shop is open to the public three days a week from Tuesday through Thursday, 9 am to 3pm.
