In a recent release, Porche has stated that it will no longer carry diesel versions of its vehicles, instead focusing on gasoline, electric, and especially hybrid options. The release stated that diesel "has traditionally played a subordinated role. Porsche doesn't condemn diesel. It is and remains an important powertrain technology."
Diesel has come under fire from various environmental agencies lately regarding its negative impact.Porche has allotted more than $7 billion in funds into electric options up to 2022, following an industry-wide trend that several other manufacturers have adopted. Porche has vowed to continue support for its existing diesel customers.
Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said in the statement "We as a sports car manufacturer, however, for whom diesel has always played a secondary role, have come to the conclusion that we would like our future to be diesel-free."
The change may also be in part due to a recall in May of over 60,000 Cayenne and Macan diesel models due to a probe stemming from parent company Volkswagen's emission control scandal.
Porche has found a new market in hybrid vehicle options, stating recently that about 63 percent of their customers who purchased their 4-door Panamera coupe opted for the hybrid version. Next year Porche will also introduce their Taycan model, their first completely electric offering based on the Mission E concept vehicle.
