This week the Canadian branch of Tesla filed a lawsuit against the Ontario government, claiming unfair treatment when they canceled a program that provided consumers rebates on electric vehicles.
The lawsuit states that it will leave hundreds of Tesla's customers without the promised rebates while allowing purchasers of other manufacturer's electric vehicles to claim theirs. The cancellation notice of the incentive program stated that it will honor the rebate for vehicles ordered through dealerships if they are delivered and registered by September 10th.
The issue for Tesla is that they sell directly through their customers, not through dealerships. This means that hundreds of Tesla customers who were assuming that the Ontario government would honor their obligation would not be getting what they were promised.
The documents filed call the decision "arbitrary and entirely unreasonable", continuing that the government has given it no reason for Tesla's exclusion from the rebate extension.
Tesla has stated that they have experienced order cancellations and they are being adversely financially affected by the decision.
Both Tesla and the Ontario Transportation Ministry have declined to comment further on the issue.
