Mercedes-Benz Debuted New Headlight Technology

Mercedes-Benz Debuted New Headlight Technology

Earlier this year Mercedes-Benz showed off a technology that we at Service King E Platte found to be simply amazing! Unfortunately here in Colorado Springs, CO we probably won't be seeing any time soon. Thanks to some outdated limitations, the US may not be seeing any advances in headlight technology at all until it's changed. Prohibitive 50-year-old Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) require all vehicles to have headlights capable of only switching from high to low beams and not blend the two together. This not only disqualifies MB's new headlights, but other technologies such as the ones developed by Audi that look much safer than what we currently have in place.

Mercedes-Benz's new adaptive headlights use the onboard computers to activate over a million micro-reflectors to brighten the roads better than any US headlight on the market. It uses advances sensors to detect other drivers and can project symbols on the ground to warn other drivers of adverse conditions.

Similarly, Audi has also engineered new headlight technologies.

Five years ago they pioneered matrix-beam LED lighting, which lit up the road tremendously without blinding oncoming drivers.

They also created matrix laser headlights recently, which perform much like Mercedes-Benz's new headlights.

It's sad that it all comes down to challenging the old high beam/low beam standards set forth in the 1960's. While innovation occurs in so many other areas of automotive technology, headlights are stuck in the past.
