Volkswagen Still a World Leader

Auto Body Review Volkswagen Still a World LeaderWith all of the controversy that the Volkswagen Group encountered in 2016, the car manufacturer made more cars than Toyota and General Motors in the first half of 2016, making it the largest producer and seller of cars on the planet currently.

At Hendrick Collision Jeff Gordon Chevrolet, we fix a wide range of different makes and models of vehicles that are both made domestically and internationally and we often repair VWs of all types here in Wilmington, NC. So hearing the recent news about Volkswagen being #1 in the world does not surprise us at all.

Despite the company's ongoing emissions drama, its production for the first six months' of 2016 is a reported 5,268,000 cars. The second place finisher Toyota manufactured 5,033,177 cars during the same period. GM's total figure is still yet to be released, but automotive sales experts all agree that they will put the American carmaker in the #3 spot once all the data is reported.

Those are the numbers for cars made during the first half of the year of 2016, but the figures change a little when car sales are factored in. The final stats on new car sales went something like this: Volkswagen Group sold 5,199,000 autos, while Toyota sold 4,991,741 across its four brands. During that same period of time, Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu and Hino sold a combined total 4,760,000 cars, to illustrate how VW literally dominated the market for the first six months of 2016.

VW’s operating profit took a considerable drop when compared to the same period last year, dropping roughly 14 percent in the first half of 2015, as opposed to the same period in 2016. Production is also down by 0.6% compared to the first half of last year, when VW made 46,000 fewer cars. Amazingly, with all of the bad press that the company has been receiving worldwide, its sales increased overall by 2.1% (109,000 cars). Toyota’s production increased by 0.4% in the first half of 2016, even though sales fell by 0.6%.

Volkswagen Group AG is a German worldwide automotive manufacturing company with its corporate headquartered in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. In 2015, it produced 9.93 million vehicles, making it the second-largest number of any company in the world, just slightly behind Toyota.  It has maintained the largest market share in Europe for over two decades and so far this year they have Toyota sitting in second, thereby switching spaces atop the list of the world's bestselling vehicles.  It also ranked seventh in the 2016 Fortune Global 500 list of the world's largest corporations.
