How Safe are Self-Driving Cars?

How Safe are Self-Driving Cars?

Despite Statistical Evidence to the Contrary, Doubt Has Recently Been Cast on the Safety of Autonomous Vehicles

In March of this year, we encountered our first pedestrian fatality attributed to a self-driving car. The tragic event sparked concerns about the decision-making processes and the ability to determine situational hazards handled by computerized vehicles. This has led experts to revisit the fundamental question: can a computer be expected to perform better that the average driver under all conditions?

With more than 40,000 fatalities last year, over 90% were attributed to human driving error. With auto body shops such as  Gross & Son Paint & Body Shop, Inc. in  Pensacola ,  FL reporting higher incidents of traffic collisions than previous years, it is becoming clearer to many that we must explore other options. Many leading experts in the fields of robotics and automotive engineering agree that this statistic leads to the conclusion that human drivers just aren't the best option. "Human drivers aren't that safe," said Lionel Robert, a professor at the Robots Institute at the University of Michigan. He continued, saying that he didn't want to make driverless cars as safe as human piloted ones, "We want self-driving cars to be safer."

When compared to certain bad driving practices, it becomes easier to see why many safety experts have begun praising the technology behind self-driving cars. They can see with a nearly 360 degree field of vision in a multitude of conditions. They aren't subject to distracted driving. They don't drive drunk or tired. They don't text and drive. They obey all driving laws and regulations at all times. As Mike Ramsey, director of research at Gartner recently said "That alone makes them safer drivers than humans."
With millions of miles of road tests behind them, autonomous cars have begun hitting the streets in more and more cities across the US. In the case of the single pedestrian fatality on record, we simply can't answer one of the most important questions: Would a human driver have made the same decision?
