Teslas Are Totally Hackable

It is always a major headache for any carmaker when a hacking vulnerability is detected in one of their vehicles, but at least in some scenarios it occurs in a controlled environment for research and development reasons. Recently, a team from Keen Security Lab, an arm of the Chinese Internet company Tencent, effectively hacked a Tesla Model S, and now they've found several more vulnerabilities in the Model X crossover that were likely exploited by a group of "self-employed" hackers in need of some fast money.

At Service King Westpark Tollway, we know that with any new technology, there will be issues and obstacles along the way and we hear about people in Houston and all over TX that have been hacked in one way or another.

In addition to being able to activate the brakes remotely with this vehicle, the team from Keen Security Lab was able to get the crossover's trunk and doors to open and close through remote access to the vehicle through its web browser. From a prospective car burglar's point of view, the latter feature is more useful, but the intricacy of the hack most likely makes using a hammer to break windows as an easier option. The overall difficulty level was described by the Tencent team of well-meaning hackers as "not very easily duplicated."

Cybersecurity researchers reported that they took complete control of a Tesla Motors, Inc. Model S and turned it off at low speeds, which is one of the notable six significant flaws that they found which can enable hackers to take control of several different systems within the vehicle.

Can hackers still do this to your Tesla Model X? Well, no longer, since Keen Security Lab told Tesla about all of the vulnerabilities earlier this year with the carmaker issuing a patch via an over-the-air update to the vehicle's software.

The bottom line here is that if given sufficient time, and with enough connected technology in any given car, a team of highly experienced computer experts can make the car do a wide range of things remotely. The ability to fully activate a vehicle's brakes remotely is the more scary discovery, and for car companies this type of vulnerability is a much larger concern, since it can affect a car's safety on the road if teams of malevolent hackers want to cause some serious havoc.

Almost anyone will agree that Elon Musk, the creator of Tesla, is a true genius-- but evidently even his inventions are capable of being hacked. Stay tuned as this story develops, because hacking is going to be one of the world's leading problems for many years to come.
