Exercise more, spend less and enjoy life to the fullest—these are all common New Year’s Resolutions people make before the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve. Most resolutions involve things like losing weight and to quit smoking, for example, but what about being a better driver?

Before you get behind the wheel on New Year’s Day, here are 10 resolutions to consider. There’s no need to wait until January 1 to become a better driver. There are no exceptions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seat belts saved about 12,700 lives in the U.S. in 2009.

2.) Put away your cell

How often have you noticed a driver on a cell phone while cruising down the street, or even worse the freeway? Put your phone away. That call, text or email can wait.

3.) Don’t drink and drive

Plan ahead and choose a designated driver. According to the AAA Foundation, almost 15 percent of people said they drove even after having too much to drink

4.) Pull over if you’re tired

Feeling drowsy while driving? Pull to the side of the road in a safe location. A quick 10-minute nap can make a big difference.

5.) Watch your speed

There is no reason to speed, unless there is a true emergency. AAA reported over a month, 52 percent of drivers said they have gone 15 miles-per-hour past the speed limit; 37 percent said they ran a red light recently.

6.) Learn minor repairs

That is, if it makes sense. There are certain maintenance jobs you can learn to do yourself, which will not only save money but help your car stay in great shape.

7.) Reduce car costs

Insurance premiums and fuel costs all add up. Take the time to price shop with other insurance companies to see if you can lower your bills. Keep track of how much you spend and try to decrease the amount of fuel you use if possible.

8.) Read your car manual

Most of us never look through it unless we have a question. You might learn some important information that could help you on the road.

9.) Ensure your vehicle is safe

You can avoid a blowout by checking your tire pressure, especially if you drive a heavier vehicle. It will help prevent costly repairs and crashes.

10.) Be prepared

Bring along the essentials in case there is an emergency. Water, extra snacks, a flashlight and jumper cables are all good items to have.
