Every movie goer loves a great, edge-of-your-seat car chase. We’ve selected four of our favorites, with clips!
Bullit (1968)
The steep-hilled streets of San Francisco set the scene for this classic chase, which features amazing muscle car stunts (for 1968 or any era) as well as dash-cam shots that are almost hard to handle. The editing is suspect, however: look for a green Volkswagen Bug that mysteriously makes multiple appearances throughout the sequence.
Bullit set the benchmark for chase scenes and makes practically every Top 10 list in existence, so why would we leave it off?
Ronin (1998)
We’ll always have Paris—for great chase scenes that is. Many have been set here, but one of the standouts is Ronin. Seven minutes of high-speed insanity ensues when Natascha McElhone’s Beemer tries to escape Robert DeNiro’s Peugot.
A nice touch is when DeNiro’s passenger decides the seatbelt might be a good idea (1:18 mark).
The French Connection (1971)
Another oldie but a goodie. According to Road & Track, this scene was shot unchoreographed and uncleared on the streets of Brooklyn, so it seems pretty fortunate everything worked out and we were able to enjoy Gene Hackman’s frenzied motor madness.
Bourne Identity (2002)
It’s never a good idea to try to outrun the cops … Unless you’re Jason Bourne. In a late-model Mini. In Paris of all places! All in all, an amazing chase scene from start to finish. But Bourne might want to review the rules for roundabouts.
