Last week Honda announced that it will begin its next wave of airbag recalls two months ahead of schedule. The total recall includes roughly a million Honda and Acura vehicles.
The recall was initiated because of the mixture of propellant used to inflate the airbags. There was a fault involving a lack of moisture absorbent chemicals that can lead to an explosion in the propellant under high temperatures. This can result in metal shards being propelled at vehicle occupants when the airbag deploys.
At the time of writing 23 people have been killed worldwide due to this defect. 180 others have been injured.
All major manufacturers have been a part of this recall, but the majority of the faulty airbags are in Hondas.
By estimation 78 percent of Honda's recalls have been performed ahead of schedule, which has prompted the last wave to be performed much sooner than anticipated.
As with all recalls, our partners at Kelly Paint & Body, Inc. in San Antonio, TX strongly suggest that you respond quickly if you receive a recall notice, especially one involving a safety system.
