Mazda To Use Virtual Engineering To Reduce Costs

Mazda To Use Virtual Engineering To Reduce Costs

Mazda has become known for some of the most innovative technological advances in the automotive industry. Continuing with this trend, Managing Executive Officer Mitsuo Hitomi has recently stated that Mazda will begin utilizing model-based development. This means that the grand majority of costs associated with building prototypes will be eliminated, allowing them to make refinements via computer modeling prior to development. We at Prostar Collision Centers here in Jacksonville, FL are keenly interested in this technology as well and its implications for our business applications!

Over the last eleven years, Mazda has been gradually moving toward this model. In 2007 Mazda began performing approximately  25 percent of its modeling on computers. Today more than 75 percent of the work is performed in this way. At a recent technology briefing, Hitomi stated "We have to expand this kind of approach. There is no model, engine or transmission to which we haven't applied this model."

Mazda credits model-based development for their breakthrough Skyactiv technologies, including the new Skyactiv X powertrain.

Other upcoming technologies include their plug-in hybrid, new electric vehicles, and an new diesel engine. Their current development techniques are allowing the manufacturer to take on multiple, large-scale projects at the same time.

Mazda is encouraging their partners and suppliers to adopt the same model to increase efficiency.

As Hitomi closed the briefing by stating: "The benefits of model-based development need to be communicated."
