New Radar Systems Pave The Way For Better Autonomous Vehicle Sensors

As we progress rapidly in the realm of self-driving vehicles, one of the most persistent issues manufacturers have come across time and again is the limitations of radar sensors. Auto makers have been installing them in vehicles for more than 20 years to assist with blind spot detection and adaptive cruise control, but with new technologies brought to us by Dutch hardware engineer NXP we will be seeing some rapid advancements.
 
NXP is the first manufacturer to design a chip specifically designed to process radar signals. Their newest product combines this chip, their new radar transceiver, and a power management circuit to efficiently transmit a signal and correctly interpret the returning data. They are also looking at methods to improve the overall radar design for future applications. 

The backbone of autonomous vehicles in the future will be built upon a strong radar system capable of preventing roadway incidents, along with LIDAR and camera systems.

These three systems integrated with strong adaptive software will provide the necessary level of safety necessary for self-driving cars to propagate the roadways with a level of confidence acceptable to regulatory bodies and customers.

After all, what would be the point of creating a vehicle that your customer base won't trust? While accidents are unavoidable, companies like NXP are helping to ensure a future where our safety is much greater than one where human drivers dominate the roadways.
