Car Paint Touch-Up Repair Tips

Feel like your car needs a little touch-up? Maybe you’ve noticed the paint has chipped due to normal wear and tear. Although it most likely doesn’t need a new paint job, if the chip is smaller than a pencil eraser, consider using touch-up paint to repair the damage. It’s relatively easy and the paint can be found in automotive stores, dealers and the Internet.

Here are some tips on how to touch up your car paint, brought to you by Hendrick Luxury Collision Center Charlotte. a shop in Charlotte, NC where we're known for doing exemplary paint work.

  • Not sure which color to use? Consult your dealer to find the right color match. You can also locate the paint code number on the firewall, according to wikihow.com, which is the piece of sheet metal separating the engine from the passengers.

  • After you’ve chosen your paint colors and gathered your supplies, always practice off the vehicle, such as on a piece of scrap metal, before starting any touch-ups on your vehicle. You can also apply the paint to an area of the car that isn’t visible.

  • The painting temperature is very important. Paintscratch.com recommends painting in a location with low humidity, isn’t in direct sunlight and is at least 70 degrees for spray paint and 50 degrees for paint pens and brush cap bottles.

  • Take the time to prepare your vehicle, which includes ensuring it is rust-free, sanding the area you are going to work on and then cleaning it thoroughly. Rust arrestor can be applied before starting the touch-up.

  • Protect your eyes and skin by using a paint respirator and wearing safety goggles and gloves.

  • Primer should be added to areas where plastic or bare metal is showing.

  • Make sure to let the basecoat dry thoroughly before applying clearcoat. Polish the vehicle after the clearcoat is dry and then wait approximately 30 days to wax your car to ensure the paint is set.

  • If you aren’t satisfied with the final job, paintscratch.com recommends removing the paint with automotive lacquer thinner.

  • Notice you have some paint on your skin? It can easily be removed with paint thinner. Then thoroughly wash with soap and water.

  • Store touch-up paint in a cool, dry place. Do not leave the paint in your car. Putting it in the refrigerator will help it last longer, but make sure not to freeze it!

If it is a larger area to paint, you’ll probably want to hire a professional like us to ensure the job is well done. We're always here to help!
