A Selection Of The Coolest Cars Of The 1980's

A Selection Of The Coolest Cars Of The 1980's

There's been a resurgence of nostalgia for the 80's over the last few years. Retrogaming, themed pop-up bars, and movies glorifying the 80's have become part of pop culture. Some of the clothing styles have even worked their way back into the modern zeitgeist. No doubt the 80's was a great time to live, but it looks like this movement is passing over one of the coolest things about the 80's: the cars!

Here are a few of my picks for the best of the best of the 80's. I'm sure I'll pass over a few favorites, but it's hard to get every one of the amazing cars from an entire decade. I'm even going to pass over some of the more obvious choices (but I still have to mention the Lamborghini Countach and the Ferrari Testarossa because I had them up on my wall as a kid.)

The Toyota MR2 holds a special place in my heart. It was light and handled amazingly. Introduced in 1984, it may have looked a little angular by today's standards but back then it was beautiful. Special mention goes to the Supra. A little more weight, a little more engine, and definitely easier for normal people to fit into than the MR2. It even made Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year in 1981.

The 1986 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z was a more affordable option to a Corvette. It handled well, ad snappy response times, and was light. At 142 HP, it was simply rad. The Chrysler Laser deserves honorable mention here as it was essentially an upscaled Daytona.

The Audi Quattros of 83 to 85 were something special. They were blocky, had a non-standard piston count (5,) and lasted only two years in the States. Still it had 4-wheel drive and a turbocharged 160 HP engine that made versions of it a force in the World Rally world of the early 80's. Fun and definitely of its time.

The Chevy Camero IROC-Z. It was a 220 HP dream. Fast and with a body that could make a grown man cry, this car is still seen around from time to time. Mostly because it's become a timeless classic far before it's become old. Even though on the track it couldn't eek out the win from the Mustang 5.0, it won our hearts.

I have to mention the DeLorean DMC-12. I just have to. Because of Back To The Future. That's why. If not for that movie, it probably would have been lost forever in the sea of time, but because of Marty and Doc, we'll never forget it. It wasn't terribly fast. It was hard to get parts which frequently needed changing. Minus the doors it didn't have too many distinctive features. Unless, of course, you sprung for the optional Flux Capacitor.

Although I've missed a ton of amazing models, these are but a few that made me drool in my teenage years. And while I may love some of the amazing models today with their convenient features and technological marvels, there will always be a place in my heart for those cars of my halcyon youth.

Do you have any of these classics and need some work done? Visit us at Fenkell Automotive of Detroit, MI and we'd love to take a look!
