The Most Dangerous Roads In The US

The Most Dangerous Roads In The US

It's an unfortunate reality that driving is one of the least safe modes of transportation. Of course safe driving habits count for a lot, but some roads seem inherently more dangerous than others. We at Service King Fort Worth see the aftermath of more than a few accidents, whether they happen in Fort Worth or anywhere in TX. With that in mind, we'd like to present you with a few places in the US where it may be advantageous to exercise a little extra caution.

The stretch of Interstate 15 outside of Las Vegas is notorious for collisions. Whether it's due to the distraction of an impending good time or having one too may the night before heading out, statistically it's one of the more dangerous highways in the US. If you find yourself on this stretch, keeping the speed down and avoiding distractions would be advisable.

Interstate 10 is a massive highway, spreading from one coast to the other. A small section of this highway is disproportionately responsible for fatal collisions, though. Pay special attention and stop frequently to ensure you're fully awake and alert if you're traveling through Arizona. Although it's a very straight and lightly traveled, driving through the desert between Flagstaff and Phoenix can lull you into a state of highway hypnosis, especially at night.

For various reasons, Interstate 4 between Tampa and Daytona Beach is extremely hazardous. At 1.25 deaths per mile, it has been the deadliest highway in the US for at least two of the last 3 years. Weather and seasonal conditions are definitely factors in its reputation. Proper tire, break, and windshield wiper maintenance can certainly help.

In the Pacific Northwest, US 199 is particularly dangerous. This is a stretch I've personally driven many times and I can see why it makes the list. The area between Grant's Pass, OR and Crescent City, CA takes you through a dark and twisting redwood forest and areas with sudden turns and large blind spots. The area paralleling the Rogue River is an area where extra attention must be paid to the road, as other drivers may not be paying as much attention as you to the road.

There are also rural areas in states such as Hawaii and Alaska that rack up fatalities that may not be as high as others in the continental US, but many of these are lightly traveled in comparison and highly subject to extreme weather conditions. As always, whether it by severe ice or heavy rain slowing down and keeping your car properly maintained may be the keys to staying safe.
