The Rise Of The Lithium-Ion Battery 

For a technology that's been around for over thirty years, capabilities of the lithium-ion battery are just now becoming clear. 

Massive improvements in regard to capacity and efficiency have firmly cemented LIon batteries as the backbone of one of the fastest growing industries - electric vehicles. The demand for LIon batteries has skyrocketed over the last decade. The sharp upticks can be pinpointed to two key events. The first is the release of the first iPhone in 2007. The second is in 2008 when Tesla unveiled its first roadster model. In that time, the power capacity of LIon batteries has more than quadrupled. This has enabled manufacturers to push the engineering limits on their vehicle powertrain designs. 

Recent advances have also enabled faster and more efficient charging of batteries, letting drivers get back on the road faster. In total, the global demand for automotive LIon batteries accounts for more than fifty percent of all LIon batteries produced, and that number is increasing drastically.

This is driven by the increase in electric car sales, much of which is supported by certain states and in some cases countries who have an interest in reducing carbon emissions by getting more EVs on the road. For example, California wants five million EVs on the road by 2030, with the state essentially mandating that manufacturers either produce EVs or pay for zero emission credits.
