Chevy Opts For Smaller Engine In The New Silverado

Chevy Opts For Smaller Engine In The New Silverado

For as long as I can remember, the measure of a truck's capability was its engine size. Bigger was better, with a supercharged V-8 the industry standard. This changed slightly with Ford's decision to use their twin-turbocharged V-6 in the F-150 line, but since its inception no other manufacturer had followed suit, despite the obvious advantages of downsizing. Fuel economy combined with competitive horsepower and foot pounds of torque apparently weren't enough to make such a fundamental change.

This has changed with Chevy's new four cylinder engine that will soon be gracing their Silverado line. For a truck that needs the ability to haul heavy loads under a variety of conditions this may seem strange, but there's a ton of tech crammed into its 2.7 liters. The result is a versatile engine that can deliver results to contend with a V-8 and fuel economy that compares to sedans.

There are a few things that set this engine apart. Its four cylinders put out a lot of power by themselves. Combine that with its "Tripower" valvetrain and you start to get something interesting. Now add a faster, more responsive turbocharger that pulls in the exhaust gasses from two ports and you have a total of 310 HP and 348 foot pounds of torque.

It's not only the ability to contend with heavier engines that sets it apart, though. It an also operate on two cylinders when under light loads, giving it unprecedented fuel economy compared to any other truck engine on the market. In a time when gas prices are as high as they are, every mile per gallon helps.

Perhaps deciding that efficiency and economy are important features in any vehicle seems counter to conventional truck wisdom, but considering the popularity of the F-150's V-6 it's becoming more apparent that buyers are beginning to value the benefits.

As new technologies emerge with engines and transmissions, hopefully the trend can continue and we can squeeze out every bit of horsepower and torque possible from smaller forms.

Undoubtedly the Silverado will become a great indicator of exactly how much confidence buyers have in these new technological advances.
