Construction Zone Safety Tips

Construction Zone Safety Tips

For many people, highway construction is one of the banes of their existence. This is even more so in areas that are normally subject to heavy rush hour traffic conditions. It can really ruin you day to suddenly find yourself in a slowdown that could make you late for work, a flight, or picking up the kids from school. If you find your daily commute suddenly grinding to a halt do to road construction, there are a few tips to make sure you arrive at your destination safely. Our partners at Service King Downtown Nashville in Nashville, TN have shared with us a few tips you may find helpful in navigating through construction zones.

The first tip is the easiest: avoid construction zones entirely. No matter how close you are from your destination, checking a navigation app on your smartphone prior to leaving can save a ton of time. To ensure nothing unexpected pops up during the commute, check periodically during your drive as well.

Always have a backup plan. If traffic suddenly stops with no relief in sight, make sure you have a plan in mind to navigate back roads and circumvent the obstruction. Knowing how to get to and from common destinations via side streets is valuable information.

If you have no other options to avoid construction and you find brake lights coming ever closer, be sure to brake safely yourself. Most construction related incidents occur from rear-end collisions due to drivers not allowing enough distance between vehicles or not paying enough attention to the changing traffic conditions. To help alert drivers behind you of the impending slowdown, tapping your brakes a few times may just grab the attention to drivers who could be distracted.

Look out for construction personnel. The leading cause of fatalities within construction zones involve a vehicle striking a pedestrian. Under most conditions, there are a lot of safety protocols in place to ensure that workers operate safely. All of these protocols are based on the assumption that drivers will adhere to all posted signs and directions from authorized personnel. Be on the lookout constantly for pedestrians and do exactly as they direct.

The last tips are something you should do under all driving circumstances. Be patient and exercise a high degree of driving etiquette. Treat other drivers with respect and understanding. Also, pay special attention to merging and make your you merge in an orderly and polite fashion.

With road construction such a common occurrence, it's inevitable that you'll encounter situations where it's unavoidable. If you remember a few of these tips, though, you'll increase your odds of getting to your destination whole and safe.
