American Driving Survey Provides Insights Into U.S. Drivers

AutoBody-Review American driving survey provides insights into U.S. driversAt Toyota Of Dallas Collision Center, we like sharing interesting facts and statistics to our blog readers. In Dallas, TX and all over the U.S., more and more drivers are on the road, but some of these numbers are staggering.

Drivers in the United States drive 17,600 minutes on average behind the wheel annually, based on the results of a survey performed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. This research reveals that more than 87.5% of Americans 16 years of age and older reported driving within the past year. During this same period, drivers traveled almost 10,900 miles on average and spent in excess of 290 hours on the road.

The American Driving Survey is well-known for being the most updated and complete look at how much Americans drive on a daily and annual basis.  With a large team of pollsters and automotive experts, this study showed that Americans drove a total of 2.45 trillion miles in 2016, which is a 2.4% increase from 2015.

Other survey findings reveal the following stats:

·         On average, male drivers report driving 2,314 more miles than female drivers annually and spend 18% more time while operating a vehicle.

·         More than 86%  of U.S. households own a minimum of one vehicle for every driver in the home and 28% report having more cars than drivers in their household.

·         Seniors in excess of 75 drive fewer miles (5,840 annually) than adolescent drivers (7,551 annually).

·         Drivers who report living in the country drive more miles (13,029 annually) compared to drivers who live in larger municipalities (10,571 annually).

·         Motorists in the Midwest and South drive more (11,295 miles annually), in comparison to those who drive in the Northeast (9,328 miles annually).

·         More than half of all miles driven by Americans are done in passenger cars, followed by SUVs (20%), then pickup trucks (17%) and finally vans (7.9%).

·         Over 66% of all road trips and almost 62% of total miles driven are performed by drivers without any passengers in the vehicle. Women are 24% more prone than men to have a passenger in the vehicle on any particular road trip.

·         On average, U.S. drivers spend more time on the road during the months of October through December at 31.5 miles every day and drive the fewest miles from January through March at 26.2 miles daily.
