Your insurance policy is a major factor.
To answer the question, we certainly use OEM parts at Auto Collision Experts. However, if you find yourself needing car repairs after an accident in San Francisco, we must comply with the insurance company who is paying for the repair and it is your insurance policy that determines what types of parts you are eligible to receive. In many cases, insurance companies prefer LKQ and aftermarket parts, since they are less expensive than OEM parts. Fortunately, we are often able to match the prices of aftermarket and LKQ parts with OEM parts on some vehicles. Therefore, even if your insurance company lists an aftermarket part on an estimate, we can usually provide a genuine OEM part for the same price as the aftermarket one.
OEM vs. LKQ and aftermarket
Because OEM parts are direct from the manufacturer, they are usually high and original equipment quality and made specifically for your make and model. With LKQ and aftermarket parts, on the other hand, technicians sometimes have to mold the parts to conform to your vehicle’s specifications. Not all aftermarket parts fit as well as the ones from the factory.
With LKQ parts, which are previously used or salvaged, their condition won’t be as great as OEM parts, but they should be in useable shape. Aftermarket parts are new, but sometimes lower quality just because they’re generic. If they are verified by the Certified Automotive Parts Association, then they are much more trustworthy than non-CAPA certified aftermarket parts.
Safety is most important.
At our body shop, we inspect every part carefully before placing it on your vehicle, regardless of where it came from. We check the condition and quality, and ensure that it will meet the specifications necessary for your make and model.
